Thailand Adoption Overview

Our Thailand Program is small but can be an excellent option for families. We began placing children from Thailand in 1987, making our Thai International Adoption Program one of our longest-running programs. We cooperated with the Pattaya Orphanage and visited last November. They take exceptional care of the children, with a large, professional staff. The Thailand program is an excellent option for young married couples, under forty, in good health couples, and who cannot have children.

New Beginnings will guide our families through the adoption process. This includes a home study, pre-approval from USCIS, and submitting the dossier to the orphanage. When a child is identified, the orphanage will prepare a background study for New Beginnings to review. We then present it to the family for consideration. Once accepted, the family travels to Thailand, and the child is placed with the family. The child’s visa is secured, and the family returns to the US.

Upon returning home, there is a post-placement supervisory period to ensure the new family is adjusting well. Then the family finalizes the adoption in their local court and secures US citizenship for the child. The final step is to register the adoption with the Thai Consulate.

Thailand is a Hague country. The central authorities are the Child Adoption Center and The Department of Children and Youth. The adoption process is well-managed and professional. Thailand has a social service system that addresses the needs of many children, making international adoption one option among many.

The process takes two years or more, so patience is needed. It takes about 12 to 15 months for the orphanage to match the child; another six to eight eight months for CAC to approve placing the child with the family. We can then send the I-800 for approval. This takes another 3 months. With that, the family can travel.

Finally, it’s important to note that adopting a child from another country can be complex and emotional. You will be given pre-adoption training and resources to prepare for the child and the changes that will come. We encourage you to seek additional resources and support as you navigate this journey. We wish you all the best as you explore this option and are here to support you every step of the way.
