Guatemala Adoption Program Update

Guatemala Adoption

Constanza Cardosa-Schultz, Director of Adopolis with Barbara GrafffeoNew Beginnings is now accepting applications for adoptions from Guatemala through an agreement with Adopolis, a licensed agency in Washington, D.C. The children available are from infancy to school age, with most children being from newborn to 18 months at the time of referral. Children vary in appearance but tend to have Indian features – light brown skin and dark hair and eyes.

Parents must be at least 25 years of age and couples must be married at least three years. Single women may apply up to the age of 50. Applicants must be in good health and financially able to care for a child entering their family. Families will travel to Guatemala City for approximately three to four (3-4) working days to pick up their child. They will be escorted while there to all appointments by an experienced translator. The adoption will have been finalized before the family travels.

Guatemala AdoptionCHILDREN AVAILABLE – BOYS AND GIRLS

Both boys and girls are available through this program and you may have gender preference. The children can be as young as 1 month of age when referred to a family.
Referrals are usually made from 1-3 months from completion of dossier (girls a little longer) and the adoption is then finalized within 6-8 months.

The children are placed in foster homes where they receive excellent care. Families will receive medical updates regularly while waiting for your child with photos and videotapes when available. Children see a pediatrician monthly. Children are generally in good health.

IS GUATEMALA ADOPTION FOR YOU

Entering into any international adoption program takes a level of patience due to the possible delays and unknowns that can occur.

You should understand that the children available for adoption in Guatemala are usually born to single mothers who are unable to support them. The birth mothers are often from small villages and have moved to Guatemala City in search of employment. Guatemala has few resources for a woman unable to support a child, and for this reason women sometimes are willing to relinquish their children for adoption.

The birth mothers are counseled about their choice to ensure that they have not been coerced or enticed to relinquish their children. To ensure that the woman is indeed the child’s birth mother, a DNA test must be performed. These tests are processed at a laboratory in the U.S. The results will be submitted to the US embassy in Guatemala.

If you are wishing to adopt a younger child, have a sex preference, and meet the requirements listed above, this may be an excellent program for you.
