Why Our Words Matter

Join us for our next Pre- and Post-Adoption Drop-In Support Group on Thursday, October 8 at 5:00 PM PT / 8:00 PM ET as we talk about adoptee-empowered language and why the words we use in adoption matter.

Steve Kalb, a Korean adoptee and longtime adoptee advocate in the post-adoption community, defines adoptee-empowered language as “language that honors the adoptee’s lived experience, avoids outdated or oppressive adoption jargon, and reflects the adoptee’s perspective in all communications.”

Because language shapes power and identity, the words we choose can influence how adoption is understood, how adoptees see themselves, and how we communicate with and about them.

This month, we are expanding the conversation to include both pre-adoptive and post-adoptive parents. Whether you are currently in the adoption process or already parenting an adoptee, we invite you to join us for a casual conversation, reflection, and shared learning.

Come with questions, come to listen, or come ready to share. Together, we will explore how the language we use every day can better support and honor our children and their experiences.
