Thinking About Adopting a Toddler or Preschooler? 5 Things to Consider
When families consider adoption, they often think of infants. However, toddlers (1–2 years) and preschoolers (3–4 years) also need permanent, loving homes. In 2022, 42% of internationally adopted children were between 1 and 4 years old. Programs in Morocco need families for toddlers and preschoolers, while Thailand needs families for preschoolers and older children.
Here are five things to consider when deciding if adopting a toddler or preschooler is right for your family:
- Growing Independence & Communication
Unlike infants, toddlers and preschoolers are learning self-care skills like feeding themselves, dressing, and brushing their teeth. Their developing verbal and nonverbal communication helps parents understand their needs more easily. - More Medical & Developmental History
Older children often come with detailed medical records, including birth history, illnesses, vaccinations, and developmental progress. This helps parents make informed decisions and prepare for any necessary support services. - Developmental Progress & Support
Some children may experience delays due to orphanage care or a lack of early stimulation. With a loving home and, if needed, Early Intervention Services (speech, physical therapy, etc.), many children thrive and catch up developmentally. - Building Secure Attachment
Adoption is a big transition, and early trauma or loss may affect attachment. Parents can use trauma-informed parenting and Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) techniques to build strong, healthy bonds with their child. - Faster Adoption Process
Families adopting children over 12 months often wait less time. In New Beginnings’ Morocco Program, families adopting children under 12 months waited an average of 19.4 months, while those adopting over 12 months waited 12.4 months.
