The U.S. Department of State has issued an exception for international adoptions following the recent suspension of visa issuance affecting 75 countries, effective January 21.

The suspension created immediate uncertainty for families in process. Adoption service providers and stakeholders sought clarification to ensure that children and prospective adoptive parents would not be delayed or separated due to visa restrictions.

The Department has now confirmed that international adoptions may proceed. In its guidance, the Department stated: “Prospective adoptive families should continue the normal adoption process, including submitting visa applications and attending consular interviews.”

Families currently in process should continue their steps as planned. New Beginnings will monitor developments and provide updates as needed.
